By The Bottle is a small online wine retailer offering a carefully curated selection of sustainable, biodynamic, organic and small-batch wines. We were tasked with creating a brand that could express their ethos, values and key points of difference.
They needed a recognisable and approachable identity that could celebrate working with local producers, organic growers and sustainable wine lovers, while also demystifying natural wines, for non-wine-experts.
We developed a hero brand character who is naturally playful, fluid, free-flowing and organic in form, drawn to be a neutral personification of people who love all things wine-related. The sculptural style of the illustrations play with overlapping, and positive and negative space making them feel like an oddly playful Cubist sketch.
The brand’s headline copy system uses the By The Bottle name as a sign off for playful lines that relate to their USPs — helping to make the brand name memorable while communicating what they do in a clear and entertaining way i.e. Delivered, By The Bottle and Drink Natural, By The Bottle.
A highly distinct colour palette was utilised, alluding to the colours of natural wine; the pale purple for the bloom on grapes and the vivid red for the bold hues found in many natural wines.
To counter the playfulness of the identity, a restrained and elevated photographic style was created, referencing classical still life paintings.
